Granola Ingredients

The ingredients for this homemade breakfast granola recipe are easy to adapt. You can choose what you have in your pantry or your favourites. I often use sunflower seeds and walnuts but it varies depending on what I have in my cupboard. Similarly, you could swap out the dried cranberries for another dried fruit of your preference.

I’ve based the size of the recipe on a one-kilogram (2.2 lbs) bag of large flake oats, as this is what is commonly found in groceries stores in Ontario. Please scale based on what you find available in your area or how much granola you would like to have on hand.

Making your Granola

Using a large sheet pan or roasting pan works best to get the most surface area possible when baking this homemade breakfast granola. I use a turkey roasting pan to make my granola at home. Depending on what you have on hand, it might need to be spread across a couple of pans.

You will start by combining the oil, maple syrup or honey, ground flax and cinnamon with the oats. I find that adding the ground flax and cinnamon at this stage helps it to stick to the oats. Once mixed this will bake for 15 minutes.

After the first bake, you can add the nuts and seeds, then return to the oven for further baking. Continuing in 15-minute increments, mixing each time, you will continue to bake until you’ve reached your desired level of browning. I find that for my oven and roasting pan this will take 45 minutes or 3 cycles, for a total cook time of 1 hour.

Once cooled add your dried fruit and store in an airtight container. This granola will keep well in your pantry for a very long time allowing for convenient breakfast food. We find that it’s best served with a little milk and some yogurt. If you have any fresh berries on hand they make for a nice addition as well. Enjoy!
